5 Most Epic + 5 Saddest Scenes in the Attack on Titan Finale

After four seasons and a few specials, the Attack on Titan finale is here! And it was as awesome and gut-wrenching as we expected.

Below, let’s look at 5 of the most epic — and 5 of the saddest — scenes from the anime’s final chapter.

Armin Leads the Attack (Epic)

Anybody who has ever fought with a friend knows how hard it is. But how about adding life or death elements? Even though the stakes are high and the pressure is on, Armin gives his heart to leading the offense. His duty is saving humanity first — and only to his suicidal, genocidal best friend later. So he jumps out of a crashing plane with the rest of the Survey Corps and allies, ready to do what needs to be done.

Armin Breaks Down (Sad)

Of course, Armin is expecting a lot of himself. When he’s almost instantly captured and subdued, he obviously reacts strongly. Sobbing and screaming, Armin criticizes himself for being weak and letting others down — demonstrated quite beautifully by Armin losing it at a second, identical body to his own. The audience knows he’s done his best, but Armin can’t see it.

Former Titans Help Their Friends (Epic)

The Paths connect all Eldians and all Titans throughout history. Inside that expanse, Armin and Zeke reach out to their fallen comrades. We see former allies like Bertholdt and even Eren’s father. Together Zeke and Armin are able to convince the Titans to help their cause. Outside, on the Founder and Attack Titan’s fused spines, the resurrected Titans turn the tide by assisting our heroes.

A Baby Almost Dies in the Rumbling (Sad)

As shown in the previous episodes, the Rumbling involves total annihilation. Massive Titans march forward with nothing to stop them. They crush everything, from the environment to its inhabitants, underfoot. At some point, people flee toward a cliff. They can either jump into the ocean or be stepped on. Two desperate parents, unable to choose their infant’s fate, start passing the bundled baby back through the crowd even as they themselves are pushed into the ocean. It’s a chilling scene made worse by the baby’s wailing and the sounds and images of the Rumbling in the distance.

Falco Saves the Day (Epic)

Falco inherited the Jaw Titan a while ago. However, we’ve never seen him transform. Luckily for our heroes, Falco and co. take the risk and find out what he can do — which is fly. Falco’s newfound ability gives everyone an extreme advantage against Eren and Ymir.

Refugees Turn into Titans (Sad)

Earlier in Attack on Titan, the enemies deployed a biological weapon to turn ordinary humans into Titans. The arc was disturbing and distressing, to say the least. Naturally, it was then repeated in the finale when the Founder Ymir unleashed vapor to transfigure a group of refugees. Among them were friends and family of the heroes fighting on the front lines. Reiner having to battle against his own crazed mother is a moment that will likely haunt him for the rest of his life.

Levi Kills Zeke (Epic)

Ever since Erwin Smith commanded Levi Ackerman to kill the Beast Titan, Levi keeps missing his chance. He almost dies in his attempts on multiple missions. But not this time. When Zeke presents himself to the Captain, Levi doesn’t hesitate to behead him. It’s a quick, brutal, and ultimately very satisfying end to that antagonist. And it also brings Levi much-needed closure.

Eren Reveals His True Feelings (Sad)

Eren Yeager has lauded himself as an apathetic, wise, and intelligent leader of the new world. But really, he’s just a kid. Since time happens all at once for him, he’s a child, an adult, and a teenager crammed into one crude body. That immaturity is incredibly clear when he starts crying over his first love, Mikasa. He babbles on selfishly about wanting her to pine after him forever once he’s made a grand speech about her moving on. It’s kind of pathetic, but also just plain heartbreaking.

Mikasa Kills Eren (Epic)

Mikasa Ackerman has always been the most powerful. But she’s always held herself back because of her feelings for Eren. When the time comes to kill him, then, can she do it? We shouldn’t have ever questioned it. Mikasa executes her plan with precision and determination, slicing through Eren’s neck in a single fluid motion. What a badass.

…But Also, Mikasa Kills Eren (Sad)

Unfortunately, killing Eren comes with extreme emotional repercussions. She kisses the severed head, and memories come flooding back of her previous, happier times with Eren. When Armin sees Eren’s head, he falls to his knees in despair and agony. Then, Mikasa disappears with Eren’s remains, sure that if she sticks around, he’ll be denied a proper burial. It’s awful, and it doesn’t feel good. But war is over … for now.
