Greg Rutkowski’s Fantasy Artwork Coming Soon from Sideshow Art Prints
Sideshow is thrilled to announce our new collaboration with renowned artist Grzegorz “Greg” Rutkowski! The Sideshow Art Prints program will soon be releasing two of Greg Rutkowski’s incredible original fantasy illustrations: Dragon’s Breath and Farewell. These breathtaking pieces visually transport viewers to far-flung realms filled with dragons, wizards, and brave knights and represent some of the staples of this well-loved genre.
Greg Rutkowski is a freelance illustrator and concept artist based in Poland. And for fans of tabletop RPGs and collectible card games, Rutkowski is a household name. This prolific creator makes visually stunning high fantasy, horror, and dark fantasy art, with pieces in his portfolio ranging from single subjects to dramatic scenes that tell their own epic tales.
He is most well known for full-color fantasy acrylic and digital art, and has illustrated for the Wizards of the Coast Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master screens, game kits, and book covers as well as for the premier trading card game Magic: The Gathering. His contributions to both properties are legendary, so here are just a few of the many projects from which you might recognize his extensive work.
Dungeons & Dragons
Greg Rutkowski has illustrated numerous Dungeon Master screens, which are long fold-out screens that feature illustrated storytelling scenes usually themed after the adventure the screen was packaged with. It’s what the players at the table spend their time looking at as the DM — Dungeon Master — hides their notes. The DM will also complete all dice rolls behind the screen to uphold the mystique of the game and their decisions. You may have seen some of Rutkowski’s landscape illustrations on DM screens for the Dungeons & Dragons Essentials Kit, depicting an adventuring party facing the dragon of Icespire Peak.
In addition to DM screens, Greg Rutkowski illustrated the cover of the Ghosts of Saltmarsh 5th Edition Handbook, which gave Dungeons & Dragons players as well as DMs more rules concerning seafaring and ocean environments, taking adventures across continents by ship (and even introducing guidelines for swashbuckling ship-to-ship combat). His vivid depictions of a roiling sea and deadly aquatic enemies help players to more fully imagine a game that mostly takes place in the “theater of the mind.” Game rules are certainly more fun to learn when you have gorgeous artwork to accompany your journey!
Magic: The Gathering
Greg Rutkowski’s card game contributions include Ancient Greenwarden, Khalni Ambush, Octoprophet, Torment of Hailfire, and many more. His illustrations cover subjects from dragons to ghosts to golems, and even legendary Planeswalkers. Featured in expansions like Zendikar Rising, Throne of Eldraine, and Ikoria: Lair of the Behemoths, it’s not unlikely that you have either pulled or played against a deck containing some of his jaw-dropping illustrations.
In addition to the powerful card effects and abilities that players use to build their decks in Magic: The Gathering, the card art is highly coveted and collected. Such high quality art conveys more than just a character, spell, or location, but rather the story and intent behind it, immersing players further into their deck building and playing. In fact, Rutkowski’s original art for the Chaos Dragon from the Dungeons & Dragons crossover card set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms (pictured above) recently sold for about $30,000 in an auction.
With his work featured in what are arguably two of the largest modern fantasy properties of all time, the upcoming print releases in collaboration with Sideshow are a must-have for fantasy aficionados, gamers, and collectors alike. Get your sneak preview of these fan-favorite images below!
